Lightning Bolt Kills Chiweshe Elderly Couple

By Richard Kawazi
An elderly Chiweshe couple is suspected to have been struck by lightning after being found dead in their tomato garden.

The fatal incident occurred last weekend.

According to a police memo seen by Nhau/Indaba, the couple George Jaji (80) and his wife Joyleen Saungweme (52) left their home in Jaji Village, Chief Makope on Sunday around 4pm heading to their garden where they intended to harvest their tomatoes.

The couple never returned prompting their son Dean Movern Jaji (24) to follow them to the garden, about two kilometres from their homestead around 7pm.

To his surprise, they were all dead.

The husband was found lying on the ground with his teeth bitting the tongue which stuck out.

Saungweme was in a semi-sitting position balancing with the garden fence, with her tongue turned black and sticking out of her mouth.

“Reportedly, there were some light rains shortly after they left with a bit of lightning and thunder and they could have been struck by lightning,” reads the memo.

Their bodies are lodged at Concession Hospital mortuary awaiting full post-mortem at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Nhau/Indaba
