Minister Moyo Warns Local Authorities

Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matebeleland North province, Richard Moyo has warned local authorities against sabotaging government by failing to come up with high quality developmental projects.

This follows government’s distribution of financial resources for development across all provinces through devolution funds.

Speaking during the commissioning of an Early Child Development (ECD) block at Nechibondo Primary School in Hwange, Minister Moyo said the government is emphasizing that all the projects should be of high quality and standards.

He encouraged councillors to oversee these projects to meet the specified requirements.

“I urge councillors to play an oversight role on projects being implemented by local authorities in order to ensure that they meet the required standard. This will ensure that councillors bring services to the people.”

This ECD block is expected to play a pivotal role towards improving the education sector in Hwange district.

“Construction of this block is an indication that council and its community are moving together with government’s vision where education is a priority,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hwange Local Board council, Chairman Mr Nqobile Mabhena said the ECD block was constructed in line with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education requirements.

“It is of paramount importance to note that this block is where a journey of nurturing and imparting knowledge starts for our future community leaders. The right to education remains the best gift every parent should give to their young ones,” said Mabhena.

The block comes after 186 pupils from six ECD classes at this school were forced to alternate days to afford them lessons.

Mabhena said apart from constructing an ECD block, the council has managed to construct an incinerator for proper disposal at Empumalanga clinic and a Tipper Truck is expected to be delivered in two weeks’ time.

President Mnangagwa implemented the economic devolution with a view of ensuring that provinces and districts act as economic hubs, competing with each other to attract investments and transform themselves into economic zones.

The government allocated Hwange Local Board $ZW83 million for devolution and $ZW20 million has since been used in the construction of the ECD block.

School Headmistress, Mrs Gertrude Magaisa applauded efforts made by the local authority although she appealed for more classroom blocks to accommodate students especially during the covid -19 pandemic.

The school was officially opened in 1987 and has a current enrolment of 1422 learners. Indaba
