Mohadi Blasts Opposition-Led Municipalities

Opposition led municipalities have failed to prioritise the importance of having a clean environment for the benefit of the people of Zimbabwe, ZANU PF Second Secretary  Kembo Mohadi has said.

Mohadi said this while addressing stakeholders at Number One Old grounds after a clean-up campaign of Hwange Colliery Company Concession bus terminus Friday.

He said the failure by the councils to collect refuse was impacting negatively on the environment.

“There is political front in municipals, it is unfortunate that the advent of the opposition political parties in our urban municipalities has had significant negative impact on our environment”

“Go to Bulawayo in the streets of Makokoba, go to Harare in the ‘Magaba’ streets, what greets you first? Its streams of sewer flowing to our dams, where the sewer will contaminate the water in our dams which we will eventually drink. Our urban centres are an eye sore. Solid waste and litter in urban centres is eating away the beauty that our urban centres once had.”

“Bayehlulekile amajaha lawa, besisithi njengoba bengabantwana abancane bazayenza okungcono, they have failed completely to run ama municipalities for the last 22 years, if they cannot run municipality what more a country, bengakwanisa uku runner ilizwe yini?

Mohadi said future generations stand at a precipice of inheriting cities without natural capital to provide for their food, clean air and water.

“Our children are in danger, if our cities continue in this state we are in trouble, to solve such problems, you have the power to correct this by voting them out of the administration of cities,” said Mohadi.

He challenged all sectors of the economy in Matabeleland North and the country at large, to put in place strategies for sustaining clean-up programmes through adopting and adapting to best waste management practices.

The best waste management practices include waste sorting at source, formation of waste management committees in various industrial clusters and shopping centres, appointment of the clean-up programme focal persons by all Ministries, departments, agencies and communities.

Meanwhile, the national clean-up was being jointly conducted with the Africa Environment Day Commemorations. The procession started with a tree planting exercise.

Matebeleland North Minister for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo and Environmental Management Authority (EMA) officials, officials from government departments and ministries at district level and various stakeholders from Hwange were part of the exercise. Indaba
