Mt Darwin Community Feeding Personnel Working On Independence Venue

As preparations for the 43rd Independence Day celebrations earmarked for Mt Darwin next month gather momentum, residents and traders within the district are complementing government efforts for the upkeep of its employees working at Mt Darwin High School.

The school will host the national event and the government has deployed machinery and its workers to spruce up the venue.

Despite the government making provisions, Nhau/Indaba reliably informed that they are playing their part by providing the deployed personnel with food and other basic needs.

Mashonaland Central Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Timothy Maregere lauded the spirit of togetherness being exhibited by the Mt Darwin community towards this cause.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations will be hosted outside Harare for the first time since 1980.

“The people of Mt Darwin are very excited about the honour. They are also coming on board helping in their own way, preparing food for drivers and operators of land development equipment at the site,” Mr. Maregere said.

This has been the community’s spirit even during the liberation war when they supported liberation fighters during the struggle with food and clothing.

Mt Darwin bore the brunt of the liberation struggle much more than many other districts in the country, hence being privileged to host the celebrations.

According to Maregere, the Independence torch will be taken to the Chibondo mass graves on the day, in recognition of millions of native sons and daughters who perished fighting for the liberation of Zimbabwe from colonial bondage.

Maregere lamented the heavy rains being experienced in the area as the major factor slowing down the pace of the preparations expected to be complete by April 7.

“Our equipment is at times failing to operate as it is getting stuck but, we are moving despite the setback. We have set the 7th of April as our deadline to have completed the sprucing up of the venue,” he said.

He said an artificial lawn will also be placed on the school’s ground.

Traders and the business community in the area are optimistic that the celebrations are going to boost to businesses and expressed their gratitude to President Mnangagwa for decentralising the commemorations. Nhau/Indaba
