Mt Darwin Man Loses Car To Robbers

Bindura Bureau
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is pleading with private motorists to desist from offering transport to strangers, especially when travelling during late hours.

This follows recent reports that a Mt Darwin man lost his Toyota Probox along the Harare-Bindura Road to four unknown men he had offered transport from Mazowe.

Police alleged that, last Wednesday at around 8pm, Thomas Nyakunemba was driving his silver Probox along Harare-Mukumbura road to Karanda and picked up four unknown male adults at Mazowe Inn.

One of the four dropped at Glendale turn-off and he proceeded with the last three.
Upon approaching Glendale Waterworks, one of the suspects who was seated at the back requested to be dropped and Nyakunemba pulled off the road.

However, in the process, one other suspect grabbed him by the throat and started fighting him before being joined by another accomplice.

The one who had requested to be dropped, produced a knife and demanded valuables from Nyakunemba. Sensing danger, he gave them US$65-00 and an Itel cellphone.

They tied both his hands and legs and drove for about 500 metres from the station before dumping him at a soya bean farm and speeding off.

Nyakunemba managed to untie himself  and walked to the highway  enroute to Glendale police station where he reported the matter.

Appealing to members of the public and transport operators, Mashonaland Central police spokesperson, Inspector Milton Mundembe said:

“ Motorists must never use their private vehicles as public transport. They risk being robbed of their valuables or even losing their lives to robbers masquerading as passengers.

We are also appealing to the general populace to venture into other income-generating projects like mining, farming, among others, rather than resorting to committing robberies,” he said. Nhau/Indaba
