At least 500 000 people have secured national identity cards countrywide under the ongoing Civil Registry department’s mobile exercise.

This follows President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s directive for every citizen to possess the valuable document according to the country’s Supreme Law. According to Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe, the exercise will be on until 30 September.

“Everyone, everywhere across the country eligible to have a national identity card must have it,” he said.

He said the exercise was not discriminatory as everyone will be served unconditionally.

He also urged those who have obtained national identity cards to take advantage of the current Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s (ZEC) voter registration exercise to register and vote for Zanu PF. The exercise will cease two days after the promulgation of the 2023 Harmonised Elections.

Mashonaland Central Provincial Registrar, Tafadzwa Nyandoro said their mobile centres were currently overwhelmed with clients turning out in large numbers.

“We are actually being overwhelmed by the numbers but, we will definitely serve all.

“We have plenty of time to do the work and to revisit some as we close the programme towards September to make sure that everyone will be served.”

He said the largest number of people visiting the mobile centres in Mashonaland Central sought birth certificates.

“During the Covid 19 induced curfews, most people could not get birth certificates for their newly born children. These are the people we are mainly serving now,” he said.

The exercise commenced on April 1. Nhau/Indaba
