Pirates Pounce On Macheso, Again

Music pirates have already started cashing in on starved Alick Macheso fans through selling counterfeit copies of the musician’s purported new album, Nhau can reveal.

An album emblazoned with Macheso’s name and image, has flooded the market.

However, it is not the sungura legend who sang or produced the album. Titled Tiyamureyi, the fake release has irked Macheso and his team who are still in the studio working on a new album.

The Murondatsimba singer is also yet to decide if the album will be released this year after it emerged that he is opting for a launch with fans.

Speaking to Nhau on Wednesday, Macheso’s publicist Tich Makahamadze said the sad thing is the CD does not even have their music.

“I think their tactics are now tired and fans should wait for the official communication from us through the media. There is a clip of Macheso singing a certain song in the studio with lyrics dominated by the word “tiyamureyi”. That is probably why they decided to use that as the name of the album,” said Makahamadze.

Before the Covid-19-induced lockdown, Macheso had started sampling his new music at his gigs, something which raised his fans’ expectations.

And the pirates, who usually cash in when musicians release new albums, are now pirating their names too.

“The sad thing is there is no Macheso’s music. They have just decided to take a picture and a name to dupe people. It’s those upcoming artists who want to sell their music, so they put their music on Macheso’s face and people will buy but later are forced to listen to it,” said Makahamadze.

He said they are no longer losing sleep over such issues.

“It’s unfortunate there are other fans who are still falling victim to that. The other thing is some buy assuming that it’s some of those songs from live performances but this time around, it’s just the picture of Macheso.

“We encourage our fans to wait patiently, we will announce when we are done with recording. There are a number of issues that still need to be decided on,” said Makahamadze.

Macheso has been dropping teasers in the studio, including returnee Zaka Zaka who is expected to lead from the front on rhythm guitar. Nhau/Indaba
