Police Brutality: Six Learners Left With Broken Arms Over Green Mealies

Police details deployed at Madziwa Mine ZRP base in Shamva are currently under investigations for allegedly assaulting six learners from Madziwa Mine Secondary school, resultantly breaking their arms.

According to sources, the unfortunate learners were reportedly stealing green mealies from the school field.

National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the probe Tuesday and said police will publish a full statement related to the incident as soon as investigations are complete.

He urged members of the public not to use the incident for political expediency.

“Investigations are in progress. We however urge the public to desist from using this for political mileage. We will issue a comprehensive statement as soon as we are done with the investigations,” he said.

According to a Shamva district hospital staffer who spoke to Nhau/Indaba on condition of anonymity, the injured learners were brought to the hospital by Shamva South legislator, Bramwell Bushu on Friday for treatment.

Sources alleged that the school authorities suspected that the six and plenty others were stealing green mealies from the school field before being taken to the police base for interrogation.

Details manning the base allegedly subjected them to massive caning which resulted in them sustaining swollen buttocks and hands.

Children’s rights activists turned to social media platforms calling for authorities to dig deeper and bring the perpetrators to book as this amounted to criminal acts against children. Nhau/Indaba
