Police Dismiss Weapons Recovery Narrative

Police have dismissed allegations that an assortment of weapons were intercepted and recovered in West Nicholson, Matabeleland South following a story circulating on social media.

In a statement, police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they had not received any such report and police were investigating the motive behind the false narrative.

The story reported that state security agents intercepted three trucks carrying tiles with several explosives, rocket launchers, grenades and AK47 rifles hidden underneath.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) dismisses a report circulating on the social media platform and attributed to the Daily Mirror on alleged recovery and interception of weapons in West Nicholson, Matabeleland South province. The Zimbabwe Republic Police categorically states that it has not received such a report.”

“The Police therefore dismisses this false story with the contempt it deserves and the public is advised to ignore it.

“The ZRP is now conducting investigations with a view of establishing the motive behind this false story,” he said.

Meanwhile, investigations are being carried out to identify eight men who robbed Bulawayo’s Vehicle Inspection Depot (VID) yesterday and got away with US$1 150 and ZWL$255 000.

It is alleged that the suspects disarmed one of the guards at the depot after attacking them with iron bars and screwdrivers before stealing a 303 rifle with no ammunition. Nhau/Indaba
