Police Exonerate First Lady, Son From Rushwaya Smuggling Case

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has exonerated First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and her son Collins of any wrongdoing after they were linked to a gold smuggling scam fronted by suspended Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya.

Rushwaya was arrested last Monday after being caught in possession of 6kg of gold at RGM International airport intending to smuggle it to Dubai.

She is currently in custody with her six accomplices that include businessman Ali Mohammed, top intelligence agent Stephen Tserayi and others.

Rushwaya’s associate Gift Karanda, had implicated the Mnangagwas in a bid to stifle Rushwaya’s arrest at the airport.

In a statement released Sunday, Assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi said further investigations showed that Karanda only mentioned the names to defeat or obstruct the course of justice and the police have since clarified the issue.

“This relates to his utterances to law enforcement officers at the Robert Mugabe International airport on 26 October 2020 when he indicated that there was no case as the gold belonged to First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa and her son Collins Mnangagwa.

“Comprehensive investigations have proved that the statement by Gift Karanda was false and malicious with intent to defeat or obstruct the course of justice. As such he was accordingly charged and the case is pending before the courts,” read the statement.

Rushwaya and her accomplices are expected to appear in court on Monday for their bail applications. Nhau/Indaba
