Professor George Kahari Dies

Former  Zimbabwean Ambassador to Germany and academic, Professor George Payne Kahari has died.

Kahari’s death was confirmed by academic Alex Magaisa while paying his condolences through his twitter handle @Wamagaisa:

“News that Prof Kahari has died saddened me greatly. He was one of the few for whom the words doyen of Zimbabwean academia are truly befitting. True knowledge is humbling, he even treated us little boys as equals. When we met I said I’m a big fan & he said I’m a big fan too!”

He was 91 years old.

Prof Kahari was a diplomat, educator, arts administrator and writer who served as an ambassador to Germany, Italy and Czechoslovakia.

 He was visiting Professor of Modern African Literature at a number of American universities.

 After his stint as a diplomat, Professor Kahari was the first black director at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

 He was one of the founders of the Catholic University of Zimbabwe, which was established in 1999.
