Police have raised concern over violent crimes through the use of dangerous weapons to settle scores at beer binges which have resulted in the increase of murder cases countrywide.
In a statement Tuesday, National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were worried that most of these cases were being perpetrated by those with close relations.
Nyathi’s statement comes in the wake of the highly politicised butchering of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Moreblessing Ali, whose death is believed to have been triggered by a beer binge.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with cases of murder and attempted murder where knives, machetes, axes and other weapons are being used to settle disputes. Most of these cases are leading to loss of lives with some of the cases being committed by close people like friends, lovers and relatives at beer binges,” he said.
Nyathi said last Sunday, Filabusi police received a murder report which occurred at a bottle store at Mavhangwe Shopping Centre the previous day after a male suspect waylaid two men and stabbed them to death following a gold sale proceeds dispute.
“The suspect, Newman Mafu (23) waylaid Nkosana Dube (25) and Mehluli Ntokozo Nkala (26) before stabbing them with a knife on the chest and back respectively.
“Nkosana Dube was later found dead, lying in a pool of blood on June 12, 2022; with a knife stab on the chest.”
On the same day, police in Shamva recorded a murder case after a man only known as Diva was fatally attacked by a machete wielding gang, led by oneJoseph Mutaiki at an open space in Wadzanai suburb.
Nyathi said Diva succumbed to serious injuries sustained during the attack upon admission at Shamva hospital yesterday.
ZRP Mkwasine reported that on June 2, 2022 suspect Respect Dube (26) attacked his friend Khosi Majuta once on the head with a burning log at Chipimbi Compound. The misunderstanding was over a knife.
Majuta died yesterday while admitted at Masvingo Provincial hospital. Dube appeared at Chiredzi Magistrates Court where he was remanded in custody.
In Kwekwe, Colleen Putse (21) and Morris Banda (24) were arrested on Sunday for attempted murder after stabbing Learnmore Mwazha (29) once on the stomach with a knife. They also struck him on the head with an empty bottle at a beer binge.
Yesterday at around 2.00am, Reason Ncube (30) and Richard Hwinya (24) were attacked by four unknown suspects at Mbizo 4 Shopping Centre while drinking beer.
“One of the complainants was struck once on the head with an empty bottle, while another was stabbed once on the neck and abdomen with a knife,” Nyathi said.
Meanwhile, Antony Costa Maruva (32) was found lying in a pool of blood after being struck twice on the head and once on the left leg with an axe by suspect Tichaona Kasera who fled from the scene in Chegutu.
Police recovered the axe at the scene and are hunting for Kasera. Nhau/Indaba
