Rushwaya’s Bid For Freedom Continues

Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya will know if her bid for freedom on gold smuggling charges to Dubai through RGM International airport will be accepted by a Harare magistrate Wednesday.

She was remanded in custody after her attempt to be granted bail hit a snag when she appeared before magistrate Ngoni Nduna yesterday.

Nduna stated that he would not be rushed by both the State and defence into making a decision without hearing the basis from their submissions on why they had consented.

The State led by Charles Muchemwa had consented to her being granted bail and had proposed the sum of $90 000 as well as attachment of Tapson Dzvetero’s house, the lawyer representing Rushwaya.

Both parties are expected to give their submissions in that regard before he makes his ruling whether to grant her bail or not.

She is facing charges of contravening section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act “smuggling”, after being caught red-handed concealing 6kgs of gold in her hand luggage by Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe scanner operators on Monday.

The gold is valued at US$333 000. Nhau/Indaba
