Russia-Ukraine War Triggers Zim Fuel Price Hikes

By Purity Marungisa and Pavel Mwaoseni
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has reviewed the prices for diesel and petrol with immediate effect due to increasing oil prices on the international markets, ripple effects of the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to the new pricing structure, diesel now costs $218.01 or US$1.68 per litre while petrol is now selling at $216.78 or US$1.67 per litre.

“Prices have been set in accordance with the increasing oil prices on the international market, which the Authority is continuously monitoring,” reads the statement.

Last evening the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) released a statement which alarmed it’s customers after citing fuel challenges.

Commuters were left exposed to exorbitant fares charged by pirate taxi operators who cash in taking advantage of the chaos that arises.

Russia being the world’s top exporter of crude and oil products combined, producing about 7 million barrels per day or 7 percent of global supplies was sanctioned by United States President Joe Biden and his allies who imposed an immediate ban on its oil and energy imports.

As a result, this has triggered price increases on international markets. Nhau/Indaba
