Student Activist Allan Moyo’s Bid For Freedom Delayed

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) member and University of Zimbabwe student Allan Moyo’s attempt to secure bail after 71 days in incarceration without trial failed to kick-off on Wednesday before High Court Judge Justice Webster Chinamhora.

This is Moyo’s second application to the High Court after Justice David Foroma denied him bail two weeks ago following his arrest on December 7 last year over charges of incitement to commit public violence.

The State sought for a postponement of the hearing after submitting that they had not yet read his papers or found time to respond to his grounds of argument.

He was represented by Obey Shava of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who stated that they will be back in court tomorrow afternoon when proceedings are expected to resume.

Moyo was remanded in custody after the Magistrates Court condemned him for allegedly calling for a revolt against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.

The State alleged that Moyo incited commuters at Harare’s Copacabana bus terminus by telling them that the time to stage a revolt against Mnangagwa’s administration was now favourable as he had failed the people of Zimbabwe.

Moyo has also made an application before the same court seeking to compel the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services to improve conditions at Harare Remand Prison where he is currently detained, including providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to prison officers and inmates. Nhau/Indaba
