The year 2021 has started on a painful note for most Zimbabweans – particularly musicians, artists in general and showbiz players.
A fresh hard lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus has brought uncertainties for many artists around the country – entertainers are worried about “normal” survival.
One such artist is T Gonzi, real name Tinashe Gonzara, who has managed to ensure consistency with a new album doing well on the airwaves.
He is confident that he will pull through the situation.
T Gonzi told Nhau Arts that even if 2020 did not go well, he managed to sustain himself through corporate endorsements, online performances and royalties.
“Man, it was obviously not the best year but I thank God we managed to pull through,” said the hipu hopu yeku ghetto rapper.
“The good thing is we are on track with company deals, lockdown performances and internet royalties.”
However, he lamented the fresh lockdown measures, saying he doubted Government would do anything to help artists.
“It’s going to be tough for the industry as a whole but I doubt if Government will take any meaningful measures to help us,” the controversial rapper said.
The Zvenyu singer revealed to Nhau Arts that he recently quietly released an album, Best Mero Volume 2, and a mixtape which is available for streaming and online purchases.
He said he is working on new stuff for 2021 featuring a lot more artists as this ensures that his fans are never starved of his music.
“I have been consistent and I love that,” he said.
“I want to continue being consistent as a mainstream artist hence this year I will keep churning out more songs.”
The Famba Murima rapper said apart from the effects of Covid-19, what he regretted the most last year was getting into the worst management deal of his career but is glad that he managed to come out of it early.
T Gonzi and his ex-manager Tinotenda Taonerera parted ways in less than amicable ways, which escalated into physical violence.
Later on he went on to sign another management deal with Madzibaba Bond Gumira junior, a deal he believes was his worst engagement ever.
“On regrets, I made the worst management deal early 2020 around March but I thank God I got out of it but it’s a life lesson.
“We no longer together I prefer not talking about it everybody knows,” said the award-winning rapper.
The rapper, who has been involved is a social media spat with singer Mudiwa, is now trying to build a clean image of himself hence leaving many of his bad habits behind. Nhau/Indaba
