Tsapo Group Clinches Lucrative Ashok Leyland Dealership

Zimbabwe’s Tsapo Group of Companies recently acquired a distributorship licence from India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturing giant Ashok Leyland, Nhau/Indaba has established.

The deal availed last week at Tsapo offices in Hatfield, Harare has been chided as an indicator of growing relations between India and Zimbabwe as Ashok Leyland increases its footprint in the country.

Tsapo Group bagged the distributorship deal adding to its already dominant service and distribution of farming, mining, public service, commercial and construction vehicles.

Before clinching the Ashok Leyland licence, Tsapo Group was already trading other major vehicle and equipment brands including Lovol, Green Energy (BYD), FAW, Sinotruck, and Golden Dragon.

Tsapo Group chief executive Dr Patrick Masocha said the partnership is a testament to a shared vision.

“This strategic partnership could not have been more timely and is a significant milestone for both companies and countries.”

“In turn, Tsapo Group is positioned to be a Zimbabwean conglomerate through its diverse business interests, including automotive, mining, and agriculture all of which have one thing in common; the need for automotive power to enhance productivity and development.

“This partnership will continue to create job opportunities for the people of Zimbabwe. It has allowed us to play our part towards the attainment of vision 2030 which seeks to create an upper middle-class economy by 2030,” he said.

Ashok Leyland Head of Africa International Operations Sachin Dasharath said their company valued Tsapo Group for creating high-quality infrastructure to distribute their vehicles.

“It’s been a great journey since we decided to engage with Tsapo Group to explore business opportunities for Ashok Leyland. We are here today because Tsapo Group has created high quality infrastructure for selling Ashok Leyland and we really value their association with us,” he said.

“We are the second largest brand in India with 75 years in existence providing a commercial range of vehicles, pick-ups and defence range of vehicles. We have been here in Africa for more than two decades,” he said.

Dasharath said Ashok Leyland has a proven record of durability and performance in both commercial and defence industries making them a favourite in the continent.

Ashok Leyland’s presence will only grow from the borehole drilling rigs that are already popular on the market to a wide range of vehicles that come with a guarantee.

Indian ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Vijay Khanduja who was part of the event said the partnership will bring success to both companies.

“I’m sure the presence of Ashok Leyland here will only bring prosperity and happiness not just to the groups involved but also to Zimbabwe,” he said.
