UN Resident Coordinator Lauds TRM Efforts To Protect Teens

Chitungwiza Bureau

United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Zimbabwe, Mr. Edward Kallon has lauded the role being played by a local charity organisation to empower and nurture vulnerable teenagers.

This was after Teen Rescue Mission (TRM), based in Chitungwiza, presented their upcoming four-track album titled ‘No to drugs and Early Pregnancy’ at the UN head office Wednesday.

The album is scheduled to be released on February 18 and has tracks encouraging teens to stay away from drugs and avoid early pregnancies.

Mr Kallon said TRM’s efforts were aligned to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 which aims to achieve quality health for all.

“It is of great sadness to note how young people are getting their life in danger by taking these substances. Having an organisation like yours, which has devoted itself to save the youths is of great importance and we applaud these efforts. Youths will indeed have quality health in line with SDG3,” Mr. Kallon said.

He stated that the UN remains committed to support efforts such as these which will ensure that young people have quality health following the sudden surge of mental health issues resulting from drug abuse and unwanted pregnancies.

Mr Kallon donated cash and pledged continuous support for the organisation after TRM Public Relations Officer Major Chirombo highlighted challenges their organisation faced such as funds to accommodate youths at counselling hubs across Zimbabwe.

TRM director Abraham Matuka expressed their gratitude after the gesture, which he said will go a long way in aiding the organisation to fulfill its mandate.

“We are indeed grateful for the UN’s support. This is a huge milestone for us and TRM has been motivated to escalate its efforts to protect the girl child and teens from drug abuse. Mental health issues are now alarming as a result of the drug scourge in society,” he said.

Present during the engagement were Mr Ernest Mutanga, Head of UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, Ms Fiona Adolu, Human Rights Advisor and Mr Sirak Gebrehiwot who is the Partnerships and Development Finance Advisor as well as TRM board members. Nhau/Indaba
