Williams Nominated For ICC Player Of The Month Award

The month of June may have not ended the way that he would have hoped for but it was one for the history books for the Chevrons all-rounder, Sean Williams.

Williams has been enjoying a purple patch in international cricket over the past month and for his brilliant all round performances on the field of play, the 36-year-old Chevrons star has been nominated for the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) Player of The Month for June.

Williams was nominated alongside Sri Lankan spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga and Australia batter, Travis Head.
The Chevrons ace has been in the form of his life in the on-going 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers which are taking place on home soil.

Williams has been an important piece of Zimbabwe’s campaign as he is the tournament’s leading run scorer.

He has been a shining light for Zimbabwe and from the seven innings in the Qualifiers, he has scored a massive 600 runs at an average of 100 per match. However, in the month of June when he played five matches, Williams scored 532 runs at an average of 133, coming from three centuries against Nepal, the United States of America (USA) and Oman, and came at a staggering strike rate of 148.60. He scored 91 more runs in the Chevrons’ win over the Netherlands.

Williams remained a key figure for Zimbabwe all the way through to the Super Six stage. The left-hander started the event in a blaze with an unbeaten 102 runs against Nepal and then managed scores of 91 and 23 in matches that followed against the Netherlands and West Indies, respectively.

After that, Williams reached triple figures in consecutive matches as he hit a brilliant record breaking 174 runs against USA and then 142 runs against Oman. He also managed to take three wickets.

Williams is enjoying one of the greatest runs in form in the history of One Day International (ODI) Cricket. He has found himself in an elite list of players such as Babar Azam and Virat Kohli.

In Zimbabwe’s first five matches at the World Cup Qualifier 2023, Williams had amassed 532 runs which became the third-most runs scored in five consecutive ODI innings, with Kohli and Azam making the top two.

It has been a month to remember for Williams, who is one of the country’s finest ever cricketers and winning the prestigious Player of The Month award will put the icing on the cake.

He has had a prolific month at the crease in the shorter format of the game.
In the event of Williams winning the award, he will be following in the footsteps of Sikandar Raza who won it in August 2022. Chronicle
