ZACC Imposters Target Cross Border Buses

By Daphne Nyakanyanga
A syndicate purporting to be Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) officers is targeting cross border buses under the disguise of carrying out an anti-smuggling operation, Nhau has learnt.

Through a statement Wednesday, the corruption watchdog warned bus operators and members of the public to be wary of this group of criminals terrorising travelers along the Harare-Beitbridge highway.

“ZACC wishes to warn members of the public that there is a syndicate of criminals purporting to be ZACC officers and demanding bribes from cross-border bus crews.

“We wish to advise cross border bus crews and members of the public that ZACC officers do not demand bribes when executing their duties,” reads the statement.

The alert comes in the wake of an incident Tuesday “in which a six-men gang using an unidentified white pick-up truck intercepted a Jasto Luxury Coaches bus traveling from South Africa between Harare and Beatrice”

“Claiming to be ZACC officers carrying out an anti-smuggling operation, the gang demanded a US$400 bribe which the bus crew paid,” ZACC said.

The gang is also believed to have stopped three other buses on the route forcing them to pay US$100 bribes. Nhau/Indaba
