Zanu PF Hwange DCC Chair Threatens Defiant Miners

Zanu PF Hwange District Coordinating Committee (DCC) Chairman Matthew Muleya has ordered miners in the district to coalesce over the maintenance of public roads they are using during their operations.

This follows pressure from road users who have become victims of the dilapidated infrastructure which has become a death trap due to pot hole induced accidents.

Muleya gave them a 14 August deadline to refurbish the roads and warned that failure to meet the cutoff date will lead to stoppage of their operations.

He said meetings have been held to address the road issues because a lot of lives have been lost but the miners remained adamant over the concerns raised.

“This nonsense should stop! They are the ones who have turned our roads into death traps, the companies need to come together and maintain these roads. We are also concerned about the dust caused by the trucks which is now affecting the public’s health.”

He said these miners were making profits out of the resources yet the surrounding communities are crying foul over their operations.

Muleya lauded efforts being made by the HCCL in establishing, hospitals, schools and various infrastructure in the mining town as it is the only company ploughing back to the community compared to other miners.

“Now we have these other miners mining the same coal mined by the HCCL, they have never established any tangible infrastructure which benefits the community yet they loot the resources from Hwange” he said.

Peterson Ncube a Hwange resident said current state of the roads was negatively affecting the district’s economy.

“The damaged Deka road links tourists to Victoria Falls, Hwange and Binga. It is a crucial facility in the development of the nation’s Victoria Falls to Binga Special Economic Zone nodes along the Zambezi River,” said Ncube.

Ncube said Hwange investors ought to respect the community and fulfill promises they offer when they are given mining grants.

Galpex Investments and Zimberly Investments have been fingered for allegedly damaged Deka road which branches off the Bulawayo/Victoria Falls highway and stretches for 48km north of Hwange town up to the resort area of Musuna along the Zambezi River.

Makomo Resources and Zambezi Gas have also been accused of allegedly damaging Sinamathela road which leads to Sinamatela game reserve. Indaba
