Zim Students In Turkey Left Homeless

Eight Zimbabwean students studying in Turkey have been left homeless after a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the country in the early hours of Monday. The earthquake also affected Turkey’s neighbour, Syria.

They are reportedly safe but staying in tents, braving heavy rain and snow conditions which are said to be hampering rescue efforts to find survivors still trapped.

Unfortunately, another 7.6 magnitude earthquake followed and media reports Tuesday say dozens of powerful aftershocks are still being experienced in southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Over 5 000 people have been reported dead in the region with millions injured while many more are feared to be still trapped under rubble ever since the massive tremor hit. Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Turkey, Alfred Mutiwazuka, told the Herald that so far their embassy had not received any deaths or injuries pertaining to any Zimbabweans.

He stated that updates will be given if any Zimbabwean becomes a casualty and said the situation was miserable.

“We have a sad situation here but from a Zimbabwean perspective, we know of eight university students learning here.”

“All of them are safe and have been given tents by rescue teams. “We will continue to check if there are any other Zimbabweans who might have been affected,” he said. Nhau/Indaba
