The number of cholera cases and deaths continues to rise in the country, with the Health Ministry’s situational report released on Sunday showing that Zimbabwe recorded 348 confirmed cases and 9 cumulative deaths.

Yesterday, 22 new suspected cases were recorded with one suspected death and 14 laboratory-confirmed results.

These were reported from Mazowe(3), Bindura (1), Beitbridge (5), Zvimba (1), Chegutu (1), Mhondoro-Ngezi (1), Buhera (3), Mutasa (1), Makoni (2), Mutare Rural (3), and Chimanimani (1), according to the latest statistics.

Suspected cases have also accumulated to 1 285 while suspected deaths have risen to 26.

As of last Friday, 149 people have been hospitalised throughout the country.

The Health Ministry has identified 17 cholera hotspots and these include Buhera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Chegutu, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke and Wedza.

Zimbabwe is among the 14 countries that have reported cholera outbreaks since the beginning of the year in Africa including South Africa, Malawi, and Mozambique.

However, health officials are currently making efforts to try and control the current outbreak as there are fears of a recurrence epidemic similar to that of 2008-2009 which claimed about 4 000 lives. Nhau/Indaba
