18-Year-Old Nabbed For Stealing ZUPCO Bus Batteries

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly stealing batteries belonging to a public transport company, Nhau/Indaba has learnt.

Taking to twitter, ZRP confirmed the incident saying Execellent Maseko who is an ex-Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) employee and operated as a bus conductor allegedly stole the batteries after the driver had commenced duty and signed for the station property which included the bus with its batteries.

“On January 15, 2023 ZRP Nkayi arrested an ex-ZUPCO bus conductor, Excellent Maseko (18) for theft of two ZUPCO bus batteries. The arrest led to the recovery of the stolen batteries. The offence was discovered on the same day after the driver had parked the bus with the batteries intact at ZUPCO Depot, Belmont, Nkayi on January, 14 2023 at around 6pm.”

In another case, the police also arrested a 32-year-old Inyathi man for assaulting police officers on duty using stones and resisting arrest during an attempted heist.

Police officers on duty allegedly intercepted him whilst attempting to conduct a robbery together with seven others.

“On 14 January 2023, ZRP Nkayi arrested Thompson Banda (32) for attacking police officers with stones. The police officers had pounced on the suspect and seven other accomplices who had planned to conduct a robbery at Matopa, Inyathi. Investigations are in progress.”

The ZRP has since warned the public against attacking police officers, an offence that amounts to a lengthy prison term.
