Car Dealers Host “Beitbridge Border Boxing Brawl”

By Gilbert Munetsi

A consortium of car dealers based at the Beitbridge border has pooled resources together to host a boxing tournament which, subject to sanction, will be the first in that corner of the country in a very long time.

Famed for producing a former heavyweight champion – Nsingo Black Tiger – back in the ’80s, the town has over the years not been known for much activity on the sporting front.

And with an aim to bring inside-the-ring entertainment in the form of a family show, the dealers, fronted by Jasto Motors, will on February 5 parade a total of seven bouts made up of boxers from Harare, South Africa and the host province, Matabeleland South.

Raising the curtain to what promises to be an eventful boxing year, the show will be held at the Beitbridge District Club with a number of boxers turning pro from amateur.Weston Chinoingira, the spokesperson for the tournament dubbed “Beitbridge Border Boxing Brawl”, said they plan more similar functions for the town going forward.

“As Masters Gym 24/7 Promotions in partnership with Jasto Motors we are hosting a professional boxing tournament in a very long time here in Beitbridge.”It’s been ages since we had any boxing action this side and we take pride in driving this initiative of facilitating a divesified mode of entertainment for our sports-starved community.

“We have decided to make it a family show to afford residents in the border town the chance to enjoy the event during the day, regardless of their age group or gender.

“All the logistical arrangements have been put in place and we anticipate seven bouts of the best that the country has to offer inside the boxing ring.”

A couple of boxers based in South Africa will grace the tournament, bringing in an international flair to the whole arrangement.

“And as part of our efforts to support the decentralisation agenda, we are having a good number of fighters coming out of our province of Matabeleland South,” he said adding the aspect of gender has also been incorporated through the inclusion of two females’ matches.

“On the card we have Zvikomborero Danzwa who is a national champion, Monica Mnkandla from Gwanda (but based in SA), Nyasha Vharinyu and Cecilia Pitiseni fighting alongside male compatriots who include Clever Sithole, Pritchard Dube and Simbarashe Hokonya, among others,” he said.

The bout card, as availed to Nhau is as follows:

1. Middleweight (6 Rounds)    Clever Sithole v Trymore Musira

2. S/lightweight (6 Rnds)    Danisa Mushore v Simbarashe Hokonya

3. Flyweight (4 Rnds)    Anyway Katunga v Beaven Sibanda
