Chitown Rapper Readies Debut Album

Rising Chitungwiza rapper Lincoln Ngorima aka Lincoln ThePrezident believes Zimbabwe has a ripe market for hip hop music.

This is despite the genre having taken a backseat in urban music as Zimdancehall and afro-pop now rule the roost.

In an interview with Nhau, Ngorima said: “I believe we are at a space where you can have the biggest song nationwide being a rap song that only cements the fact it (the market) is ours for the taking!”

Over the years, a few rappers have had crossover hits among them Stunner’s “Godo” and Peekay’s “Mamonya”, but not as much as other genres.

Asked about what is new or different he thinks is taking the genre a step further, Ngorima said, “Perspective I reign from the heart of the nation ChiTown, the melting pot where our societies mix and meet from the comfortable to those in abject poverty reaching to broader aspects of human plight, the pursuit of happiness and the routes it takes us.”

Ngorima is an MC, rapper, songwriter and poet.

The second child in a family of three children, The Prez, as he is affectionally known, fell in love with music at a tender age which saw him joining choirs both at school and church.

His hip hop influence came from his older brother Livingstone ‘AyyDawg’ Ngorima an avid listener who introduced him to greats in the form of Eminem, Ludacris and Lupe Fiasco.

“I recorded my first track in 2012 starting up a chain of events that led to a lot of performances, cyphers and the discovery of spoken word through my fellow artistes in a coalition by the name “VeKwaSeKe” which comprises of myself Aspaya and Kevin Munetsi,” said The Prez.

“With this collective we managed to organise a monthly open mic event, the Dream Elevation movement.”

Along with Peace In The Hood events, local club performances, and Bocapa shows, in 2014 the trio managed to perform at Shoko Festival.

“We participated in the Next Level Tour of Zimbabwe which found me collaborating with American counter parts in performances,” he said.

The Prez has taken his time to mature in music thus waiting until later this year to release his debut album.

“I will release the title track to my album Peasant’s Son (Zvinebasareyi) on March 25,” he said. Nhau/Indaba
