Chitungwiza Residents Sue Council Over Floods

Chitungwiza Residents’ Trust (CHITREST) director Diana Kuvheya has told Nhau that residents that were affected by Friday’s flooding will soon be suing Chitungwiza Municipality and Government for losses that were incurred.

In an exclusive interview with Nhau, Kuveya said that the floods were a result of poor town planning by the local authority.

“Authorities are lying that the floods only affected people who are settled on wetlands. Our assessments revealed that even people who are settled on designated sites were also affected and we will be suing council and Government so that they compensate the residents,” said Kuveya.

Kuveya revealed that they have since engaged human rights lawyers who are currently on the ground to help residents get compensation.

“The floods came as a result of poor drainage. There is no drainage system in Chitungwiza and this is clearly a result of poor town planning by the local authority and for that authorities should compensate affected residents,” revealed Kuveya.

The Minister of Local Government and Public Works has said Government will soon be resettling inhabitants of wetlands in order to prevent disasters in the future.

“There is no politics in dealing with this serious problem. Let’s confront it as Zimbabweans. We are appealing to all those settled in wetlands by whoever to come forward so that we can deal with that matter,” said Minister Moyo during a tour of the affected areas on Saturday.

“If they remain silent, let them not cry when we take action. We want to move people having got the history of what happened, so that we have correct solutions to correct information that would have been given to us.”

Many residents, especially those settled on wetlands, in areas which include Seke Unit N Extension near Zaoga, Seke Unit A Extension along Duri River, Seke Unit M, and the Pagomba area in Zengeza 4, as well as new settlements that fall under Manyame Rural District Council had their household property worth thousands of US dollars destroyed by the flash floods.
