Chitungwiza teens donate cash to firecracker victim

By Tawanda Matanhire

The Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) yesterday donated cash to Godfrey Munhungaupi (13), a boy whose face was deformed in a firecracker accident.
The cash is to pay for his medical expenses.
TRM is the brainchild of gospel music artist Abraham Matuka and takes care of vulnerable teenagers across the country.
Godfrey was playing with a firecracker and a solar panel when it exploded in his face resulting in multiple injuries on his face.
He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he is admitted.
Speaking to Nhau, TRM Chitungwiza youth coordinator Rodney Chitanakwe said they were saddened by what happened to Godfrey and sought to lend a helping hand.
“After coming across the story of Godfrey and seeing his picture on social media, it really moved us as teens in Chitungwiza. We agreed to give a hand in donating cash because we feel that Godfrey is one of us,” Said Chitanakwe.
Chitanakwe blamed Covid-19 lockdown restrictions for the accident, saying young people are now more vulnerable as they are out of school and idle at home.
He said this pushes them to exert their energy on doing wrong things, experimenting with all sorts of gadgets, drug abuse and other deviant behaviour.
A lot of pregnancies have also been reported among teenagers throughout the country. Both parents and teachers have attributed these to idleness caused by the extended closure of schools due to the pandemic.
“The incident involving Godfrey speaks volumes about the consequences of idleness,” he lamented.
“We want to thank Teen Rescue Mission for coming up with programmes which are helping us while at home to remain vigilant and improving our lives.”
Godfrey’s mother expressed gratitude and appreciation to TRM for the donation.
“It brings joy knowing that Godfrey has friends that came all the various parts of town to make sure one of them recovers from the burns he sustained in the accident. May God continue blessing you,” she said, thanking TRM.
Miss Grace Rewu, the TRM Chitungwiza secretary, also spoke on the incident saying parents should always be watchful of their children to avoid accidents.
“During this time parents must always keep an eye out. We have young girls now into sexual activities and it’s so disturbing. We hope the pandemic will end soon and we don’t continue losing future leaders to deaths while others get permanent disabilities,” she said.
Chitungwiza TRM Advisor Mr Ailack Mwanza praised the teens and youths in Chitungwiza for coming up with such an initiative to help young people in communities.
“I feel so proud as a leader to see young people feeling for each other. This is something we are advocating for at Teen Rescue Mission that our members must embrace ubuntu.
“We are teaching our teens and youths to have oneness by caring for one another. If this love grows with them then we know our future Zimbabwe will be great,” he said.
He also invited corporates and individuals to emulate and support various causes such as Godfrey’s case. Nhau/Indaba
