Corruption: Heads Roll In Zim’s Justice System

Heads are starting to roll at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and other arms of Zimbabwe’s justice delivery system following the arrest of three judicial officers within a space of a month.

This follows announcements made by Zimbabwe’s corruption watchdog, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) last year in December that it had opened investigations against judges, magistrates, prosecutors and church leaders over graft.

Prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema was the first to be nabbed in December and hauled before the courts for criminal abuse of office after consenting to the granting of bail to alleged notorious armed robbers Musa Taj Abdul, Tapiwa Rudolf Kanhanga and Godfrey Mupamhanga by the High Court.

Kasema is still in custody after he was denied bail by Harare magistrate Ngoni Nduna.

During that same month, magistrate Morgan Nemadire was arrested on a similar charge for handing down a “lenient sentence” to a Venezuelan national, Delcy Daymar Rodriguez Guererro.

Nemadire is currently out of custody after being granted Z$5 000 bail by magistrate Ngoni Nduna, who remanded him to February 3, 2021 for routine remand.

Guerrero was fined Z$700 after being convicted for possession of more than 5kgs of cocaine worth US$469 000, a decision which was allegedly arrived at through corruption.

Yesterday, the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU) head Tabani Mpofu confirmed the arrest of prosecutor Arthur Bosha, who is alleged to have assented to bail for two suspected armed robbers, who were notorious armed robber Musa Taj Abdul’s accomplices.

Bosha is set to appear in court today, although the actual charges he is facing have not been made public. Nhau/Indaba
