Scores Injured In Bloody Scramble For Gold Ore

The discovery of gold at Leon Farm about 10 kilometers west of the city has triggered a now familiar scramble for the precious stone among panners in Kadoma and its surrounding areas.

“I’m coming from Leon Farm where gold ore has been discovered. I heard the news this morning and went there to try my luck,” Quid, a gold panner, who resides in Rimuka told Nhau.

“I managed to get a small amount of the ore and took it to a processor where I realised about three grams. That gave me almost US$150. There was chaos with people from around Kadoma and far afield.

“Police and army details were deployed to disperse the gold panners who had invaded the place. It was a hive of activity there. I had to run for dear life as people were getting bashed for illegally extracting gold without licences.”

He said the chaos had led to damage on a road that leads to the farm from Rimuka.

“That road is now badly damaged. The damage occurred in a short period of time.”

Kadoma also called the City of Gold, is popular for its rich gold deposits. Gold diggers flock to areas where there will be reports of easy pickings of gold ore, resulting in panners hurting or even killing each other.

In many instances, the police and army are deployed to deal with the Invaders. Efforts to get a comment from the police spokesperson did not yield results. Nhau/Indaba
