Covid-19 Themed Program For Independence

By Melisa Gombe

Zimbabwe will from tomorrow kick start a series of events to celebrate Independence in strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines.

Though this year’s celebrations are occurring in a much-relaxed environment compared to last year’s strict lockdown protocols, the government is not taking chances thus spacing the Uhuru events to different venues and dates while limiting the number of those attending the events to 50 people.

Most of the programing has also taken a virtual format thus limiting the human contact.

Themed ‘Zim @41 together, growing the economy for a prosperous resilient and inclusive society’, the first event will be the National Attire Design Competition between designers representing different provinces.

The event will take place tomorrow at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

A Children’s Party will follow up on the Eve of Independence day at the State House in Harare.

A selected 50 children from the country’s 10 provinces will be attending the party.

The President’s interview will be broadcast on ZBC TV, and various national radio stations as well as online platforms for the diaspora community on the same evening at 8.30pm.

Just like any other year, there will be an Independence Gala starting at 6pm on the Eve of the country’s Independence to 6am on 18 April.

At midnight on Independence Day, there will be a fireworks display launch from HICC with those in the nearby suburbs witnessing this in the comfort of their homes while ZBC TV will be covering this event live for the benefit of the whole nation.

President Mnangagwa’s address to the nation will be broadcast live on television, radio stations and on various online platforms at 11.30am on Sunday.

The Uhuru Cup final, a clash between the country’s oldest soccer teams Dynamos and Highlanders will seal off the celebrations.

Kick-off will be at 1pm at an empty National Sports Stadium with only a maximum of 50 people allowed at the venue among them players, technical teams, and members of the media.

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga will be the guest of honour.  Nhau/Indaba
