Daring Hwange Thieves Pounce On Graves

A group of thieves is allegedly terrorising Hwange residents and demolishing graves at Madumabisa cemetery, Indaba has learnt.

Madumabisa is an old compound northwest of Hwange.

The gang is stealing red bricks labelled Wankie.

This bizarre incident has left Hwange in shock as the thieves are targeting graves built with old shiny Wankie bricks for resale to builders in Empumalanga Township and Victoria Falls city.

O’Brian Nyathi a resident of Madumabisa village (Number 2) said the behavior of these people is a sign of culture erosion due to poverty.

“People have lost Ubuntu, how can someone steal from the graveyards? Poverty is driving people crazy and we are losing our culture. Culturally it is taboo to temper around with grave yards,” said Nyathi.

Indaba visited Number 2 grave yard and saw the destruction.

Nyathi said recently the thieves pounced on the old Methodist church and stole the same bricks leaving it in shambles.

Meanwhile, other sources in the area said they reported the malicious damage to the police but the thieves continue with their unlawful acts.

No arrests have been made so far. Police as well the Hwange Town Board could not be reached for comment by the time of publication. Nhau/Indaba
