A tragic road accident on the Harare-Bindura Road yesterday afternoon resulted in the loss of five lives and left 37 others injured. The incident occurred at the 37km mark when a commuter omnibus collided head-on with a truck.
According to Commissioner Paul Nyathi, national police spokesperson, the fatal crash involved an 18-passenger kombi and a Man truck carrying three passengers. Following the initial collision, the kombi also side-swiped a Toyota Belta with three occupants.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on June 18, 2024, at the 37 kilometre peg along Harare-Bindura Road. Five people were killed while 13 others were injured,” Commissioner Nyathi reported. The deceased were transferred to Concession Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured are receiving treatment at the same facility.
This tragic incident follows a weekend marred by multiple accidents across Zimbabwe. Earlier reports indicated six fatalities and 33 injuries from separate incidents in Kadoma, Marondera, and Zvishavane.
In Kadoma, a Nissan Caravan kombi collided with a juvenile cyclist, resulting in two deaths and nine injuries. The kombi, carrying 18 passengers, veered off the road after the collision. The whereabouts of the driver remain unknown.
Meanwhile, in Marondera, a Toyota Wish carrying ten passengers crashed into a tree, claiming two lives and injuring eight others. Similarly, in Zvishavane, a Mazda Bongo carrying 18 passengers overturned, resulting in two fatalities and 16 injuries.
Police authorities have urged motorists to prioritize caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to mitigate such accidents. The incidents underscore the ongoing need for heightened road safety awareness and adherence to traffic laws across Zimbabwe.
