The Government has launched the fourth Food Distribution Blitz, which began on February 1 and is set to run until March 31, ensuring food security for vulnerable households across Zimbabwe.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere confirmed the ongoing relief efforts at a post-Cabinet media briefing, underscoring the Second Republic’s commitment to preventing hunger.
The food relief initiative is part of the broader Food Deficit Mitigation Programme, which was reviewed by Cabinet following a report presented by Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo.
Dr. Muswere noted that the third blitz ran from November 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025, successfully reaching eligible beneficiaries.
“The Government of Zimbabwe has distributed over 90 percent of the total grain to food-insecure and vulnerable households, while development partners have provided the remaining 10 percent,” said Dr. Muswere.
With the fourth phase of distribution now in motion, the Government is also preparing for the First Round Crop Assessment to evaluate the expected harvest, and early indications suggest a positive outlook.
Last year, President Mnangagwa declared the El Niño-induced drought a state of disaster, following a sharp decline in grain output. This declaration activated state assistance for affected communities while also appealing to development partners for additional support. Since April 2024, the Government, in collaboration with these partners, has been providing food relief to those in need.
