HAB to hold inaugural competition

The Harare Athletics Board (HAB) is set to hold its inaugural cadet competition to accommodate athletes under the age of 14 in February next year.
HAB chairperson, Cousinet Simunyu, said the move is meant to give young athletes an opportunity to showcase their talents.
“These are our young athletes under the age of 14, the only competition they are more involved in is the NAPH, NASH and COSASA, no other championship thereafter.
“So we want to catch them young at their own competition where youths, juniors and seniors will be cheering them,” said Simunyu.
She said they have competition for other categories globally and they fail this age group has been neglected.
“We have youth, junior and senior championships globally and this special category is left out.
“So after we do it as Harare, we will then engage the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) and eventually NAAZ will push it to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and World Athletics (WA).”
Simunyu also hinted on an eventful year, come 2021.
“Harare Athletics Board will host a number of events in 2021 starting with the regular cross country where we select our provincial team for the national cross country to be hosted by Mashonaland West.
“Other events include Mr Pace challenge, Harare Marathon, CBZ marathon, the Westgate half marathon, UZ Track and field championships and the recently introduced Amen Academy track and field championships, among many others.
“Harare will also play host to the National Interprovincial Championships and will take advantage of that to field the strongest team so as to maintain our dominance in athletics,” she said. Nhau/Indaba
