Ill Marry Mubaiwa Hauled To Court On Stretcher Bed

There was drama at Harare Magistrates Court Monday after Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry Mubaiwa appeared before Magistrate Trynos Utahwashe on a stretcher bed.

Mubaiwa was dragged from her hospital bed and brought to court by an ambulance to allow for the cancellation of two warrants of arrest issued against her after she failed to avail herself in court to answer to charges of money laundering and attempted murder charges.

Utahwashe cancelled both arrest warrants after Mubaiwa came to court in an ambulance and had to be escorted by medics to enable her to attend the court proceedings sitting in a wheelchair.

After cancelling them, the State led by prosecutor Netsai Mushayabasa indicated that it was ready for trial on assault charges she is also facing.

Mubaiwa is alleged to have assaulted the Chiwenga family maid, Delight Munyoro, at Hellenic School in Borrowdale following an altercation over the custody of their children in January this year.

Munyoro had gone to the school to pick up the children, but clashed with Mubaiwa at the school.

On the money laundering charge, Mushayabasa told the court that the case was not yet ready for trial as extra territorial investigations were yet to be carried out in South Africa.

Mubaiwa’s lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa told the court that the matter has been running for almost a year now yet nothing was being done, querying how long the State was going to conduct the investigations.

After the court proceedings, Mtetwa told the media that Covid-19 was being used as an excuse to delay the investigations.

“Covid is being used as excuse that they are conducting extra territorial investigations. Yes, when the matter went to court they said they had done those investigations and this shows how our justice system works. You arrest first and investigate later,” she said.

Mubaiwa is expected back in court on January 28 next year. Nhau/Indaba
