Lack Of A Fire Tender Puts Bindura Municipality Underfire

By Richard Kawazi

Members of the Bindura Business Community Trust have been infuriated by the local authority’s failure to procure a fire tender despite religious payments for fire services by ratepayers in the town.

This follows the destruction of property worth millions of dollars early Thursday morning after fire broke out at Muunganirwa bar and grocery shop in Chipadze.

Two months ago, Bindura’s Club 1160 was razed down by fire and the municipality failed to provide any assistance thereby raising the ire of the trust.

The trust is an ensemble of local business people across all sectors.

Speaking to Nhau/Indaba Thursday afternoon, the trust’s secretary general Richard Phiri blasted municipal authorities for reportedly neglecting the business community and other stakeholders who pay rates.

“It is unacceptable that council has not procured a fire tender in this millennium.

“We are very much saddened by the fact that council is failing to provide fire fighting services despite all businesses paying monthly fire services bills.”

“Bindura municipality must procure a fire tender and it must have water all the time”, he said.

Phiri said their trust would find means of assisting Muunganirwa to restock following the unfortunate incident.

“We are really sorry for the disaster that has befallen one of our fellow businessman. As the Bindura Business Community Trust, we will do our level best to assist him with restocking,” he said.

The fire which is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault according to sources, was eventually extinguished after the intervention of Freda Rebecca Gold Mine. Not even a single senior council official was present when the fire was doused.

Efforts to get a comment from Bindura Municipality concerning the fire tender issue yielded nothing. Nhau/Indaba
