Cars are never meant to be a headache, rather they should be a source of comfort, an asset and provide you with the convenience you require.

Ironically, first time car buyers and even some experienced ones, seldom enjoy the ride, asset status or even get value for money. I attribute these troubles to ignorance about motor vehicle maintenance.

Picking up from where we left off last week, below are things you MUST religiously follow in order to enjoy your car and keep its resell value healthy:

Taking Good Care Of A Car
Maintenance of a motor vehicle is one important aspect of ownership because a well maintained car is always reliable and gives you its full benefits.

Vehicle service

Being a car dealer has made me appreciate good car maintenance. It is always the case that a well-taken care of vehicle will please a customer no matter how old it is. From the paint job to the wheels, engine and interior – it is always the case that a good looking vehicle is valued higher than one which looks like a ramshackle.

When you use your car make sure you always keep it as clean as possible because one day when you no longer want it someone might just appreciate its condition. Regular professional car wash of the interior and the exterior is very essential. Buffing and car polishing always leaves a car sparkling more-so if the engine is cleaned properly, leaks are easily noticed.

Take Note Of The Resale Value
Many times people pay large sums of money to get a car and think they can sell it later at almost the same price. That is not often the case. Some car brands lose value as soon as they leave the showroom. Take note and research about the market prices of cars and the trends in depreciating value of different brands. This might guide you on which cars to buy so that in the event that you want to resell it, the value is reasonably maintained.

Poor research on market price could leave you with a value way below your expectations after reselling

Negotiate A Good Deal
Don’t be quick to pay the price on the tag. It’s always wise to have yourself a bargaining space. The money could help you in a lot of ways after the purchase. Already, when dealers mark a price they make sure the price is pegged with space to negotiate, so make sure you get them to their last wanted price. If you are not good at this better find someone who is very good at negotiating and engage them.

Negotiation process

Get The Paperwork Done
Never close a deal and drive away without making sure that the proper paperwork has been done. Do not take chances on this one! Get the car registration book and check every detail on it and make sure everything matches what is on the car data plate including the colour of the car. Get a second eye to verify if you are not sure of anything. Make sure your witness also has their signature on the paperwork and make copies for both parties.

From this stage you now have a car in your name. You are the owner, whatever happens with the car is your responsibility. So make sure you take good care it.

After finalising and verifying paper work, the car is yours

Never expect to get a perfect ride because this is a used car. Whoever sold it had their reasons and when you are driving the car always be on the lookout for any unfamiliar sounds or warning dashboard lights. Visit a mechanic or a professional for diagnosis and don’t take chances driving your vehicle in any state which you don’t understand.

A well-taken care of vehicle will always perform better and give you the value pegged on it and it’s always good to make sure you have everything in its right working condition rather than improvising and cutting corners.
