‘Mamombe, Chimbiri Undermining Court System’

MDC Alliance members, legislator Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri, are undermining the country’s justice system by continuously committing offences, a Harare prosecutor has said.

Representing the State, prosecutor Audrey Chogumaira told Harare magistrate Stanford Kambanje that the duo continued to commit offences while on bail for other charges.

“The accused persons are not perfect candidates for bail as they are undermining the court system, which would have granted them bail by committing other offences,” she said.

This comes after their application to be granted bail on fresh allegations of undermining police authority.

However, their lawyer Charles Kwaramba from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) told the court that they were being charged with a defective charge which was repealed.

He added that they were merely being targeted as part of political persecution since they are opposition MDC Alliance party youth leaders.

The duo spent Tuesday night at Chikurubi Maximum Prison after their bail hearing failed to kick-off yesterday due to want of time. Nhau/Indaba
