Mamombe To Spend Night At Chikurubi

Harare West legislator Joana Mamombe and MDC Alliance’s Cecilia Chimbiri will spend the night at Chikurubi Maximum Prison after their bail application was postponed to tomorrow when they appeared before Harare magistrate Stanley Mambanje Tuesday.

The duo are facing allegations of obstructing or hindering police officers performing duty during lockdown in contravention of Section 11 of SI 83 of 2020 and undermining the police.

Before their appearance in court, Mamombe spoke to reporters outside the Harare Magistrates Court where she challenged President Mnangagwa’s Government to stop arbitrary arrests of citizens.

“You see, these arbitrary arrests must stop. I am actually here encouraging other young people out there to say let’s not stop the train of change. Let’s not even be deterred, not even scared … We are here and we remain resolute. We are unshaken,” she said.

Prosecutor Netsai Mushayabasa told the court that the duo reportedly shouted obscenities at the police who were arresting people gathered for a flash demonstration for the release of Zengeza West legislator and MDC Alliance national deputy chairperson Job Sikhala in Harare yesterday.

While being escorted to the prison cells after their appearance, Mamombe stated that the only thing they feared was Covid-19, otherwise they would continue fighting Government’s human rights abuses.

“We are resolute, that is why you see us dressed in this garb (Covid-19 hazmat suits) … we fear (the) coronavirus, which has spread worldwide. Nothing else will draw us back. Zimbabweans have been oppressed for a long time. As youths, let us remain resolute in the fight of our rights,” she said. Nhau/Indaba
