New Private School For Hwange

Hwange Bureau

A new state-of-the-art private school to cater for Early Child Development (ECD) and grade one to four learners has been established in the coal mining town of Hwange.

Mickey Murphy Junior  school was formed in line with efforts to expand the education system in the town as well as complementing already existing government schools in the area.

Located in DRC , Empumalanga Township, the school started as ECD centre in 2014 and has now attracted children from all walks of life whose parents and guardians can afford top class education.

School coordinator, Everisto Mukondiwa told Indaba that the institution was targeting to expand and accommodate grades five to seven after having being allocated more land by the Hwange Rural District Council.

“We started as an ECD centre eventually becoming an infant school. Now we have achieved junior school status and are grateful to the Hwange Rural District Council. They have since allocated us with more land in St Mary to establish more classroom blocks for expansion,” he said.

The establishment of school will incorporate learners from Lukhosi, St Marys and Nekabandama on a daily basis and is not congested with a learner-teacher ratio of 15:1 as a measure to counter the spread of COVID-19 from affecting learners and staff.

“We have seen that Hwange has only one private school while most schools are run by the government. We want to come up with a private school that caters for all the communities within Hwange.”

“We are a Christian school which is geared in the fight against COVID-19. Of course we had to close the school during the peak of the pandemic and when the nation induced lockdowns. We also took advantage of the pause on the school calendar and developed our school. Of late we have never recorded a single case of COVID -19,” said Mr Mukondiwa.

The school which was officially registered as a Junior School with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has an enrolment of approximately 200 learners and 14 teachers. Indaba
