PDC Donates To 5 Miles Isolation Centre

The Painted Dog Conservation (PDC) has donated two oximeters to the 5 Miles Covid-19 Isolation Centre in Hwange District.

PDC Conservation and Community Liaison Manager Mr Dominic Nyathi told Indaba that the organisation was responding to a call to capacitate the centre.

“The District Medical Officer made the request, Kathy and Steve Taylor of the Askari Safaris based in Boston, USA sourced the funds, and the Taylors are friends of the wild dogs and lovers of wildlife and nature,” he said.

Painted Dog Conservation has always been active in saving front-liners and wildlife. They have actively involved the community in their free education programmes in their core operating areas which fall under Chief Nelukoba and Chief Nekatambe.

Meanwhile, Dr Claydence Muronzi, who received the donation on behalf of the District Medical Officer said the donated equipment would assist in the fight against Covid-19.

“These oximeters will assist Covid-19 patience, especially those who are in need of oxygen. Covid-19 is a disease that affects oxygen saturation, we are going to make use of them as it will also improve our patient care,” said Dr Muronzi.

The purpose of pulse oximetres is to check if the heart is pumping oxygen through the body. It may be used to monitor the health of individuals with any type of condition that can affect blood oxygen levels, especially while they are in the hospital.

These conditions include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pneumonia, lung cancer, anemia, heart attack or heart failure congenital heart defects.

There are a number of different common use cases for pulse oximetry, including to assess how well a new lung medication is working, to evaluate whether someone needs help breathing, to evaluate how helpful a ventilator is and to monitor oxygen levels during or after surgical procedures that require sedation.

PDC also donated 100 litres of fuel to the centre. Nhau/Indaba
