Residents Fume as BCC discharges dirty water from taps

BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) has once again come under attack from residents for allegedly releasing contaminated water from taps in the process exposing them to water-borne diseases.

This comes after residents on Monday woke up to their taps releasing discolored dirty water.

This is hardly months after the city was hit by a killer diarrhoea outbreak that claimed 13 lives and infected over 2000 others.

The outbreak was blamed on contaminated water.

Indaba understands that areas such as Emakhandeni, Magwegwe, Lobengula, and some parts of the city center were receiving dirty water sparking fears of yet another round of water-borne diseases.

Efforts to get a comment from the city fathers on Tuesday drew a blank response.

Emailed questions sent to BCC senior Public Relations officer Nesisa Mpofu were by the time of going for publication not responded to.

“The standard of service provision has gone down massively in the City of Bulawayo. The city is now a shell of the beacon of service delivery it was known for the world over,” coordinator of the National Consumer Rights Association (Nacora) Effie Ncube said.

“Delivering water that does not meet quality standards exposes consumers to potential water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea. Given the recent Luveve water tragedy in which lives were lost, this latest incident tells you that the City is going down the drain and is becoming a death trap,” Ncube added.

“The behavior of city management smacks of arrogance and a don’t-care attitude that needs to be urgently addressed before things get worse.”

Bulawayo residents are enduring a serious water crisis in years owing to dwindling supply at its supply dams.

The city has previously announced that it’s sewage system has outlived it’s lifespan.

The local authority has indicated that it urgently needs US$1 482 000 to address water contamination problems in the city.
