Sakupwanya Joins Race Against Drugs

Better Brands Jewellery founder and businessman Scott Sakupwanya has joined the fight against drug abuse, early pregnancy and crime among teens which threatens their livelihoods if no drastic measures are taken.

As part of the measures, Sakupwanya pledged a reasonable sum of money towards the construction of a life-skills training facility for youths in Chitungwiza during a fundraiser held in Harare last Saturday.

This follows calls by Teen Rescue Mission (TRM), a non-profit youth organisation, for support in the contruction of a centre that will help keep teens occupied from drugs, early sexual activities and criminal acts through various projects.

“As part of my desire to see youths being empowered everywhere in Zimbabwe, i felt touched by this organisation’s efforts and will fully support them to achieve their targets. It is a vital decision to have youths abstaining from drugs and measures being taken by TRM deserve everyone’s support for the betterment of our society,” he said.

TRM founder and director, Abraham Matuka thanked the businessman for the gesture which he said will go a long way in fulfilling his organisation’s dreams, further expanding its scope and creating an enabling environment for it to meet its target.

Matuka said they want the centre to house a counselling centre, an arts and craft section as well as a recording studio.

“We want depressed youths who feel lonely to simply walk in and have counselling sessions so that we manage to detect how best we can assist them concerning their different situations. The place will involve talented youths in the arts and entertainment sector (dancers, singers etc) from the community to realise their dreams coming true.

“We are also planning to build a studio where talented youths can record their music,” he said.

Matuka said they are currently running a poultry project at the site which is currently raising funds sustaining some of their projects.

He appealed for more corporates and individuals to support their cause which will rid society of the current drug menace. Nhau/Indaba
