Following the death of retired Labour Court judge, Justice Selo Masole Nare, on Saturday in South Africa, Zimbabwe is preparing to honor his memory with a State-assisted funeral.
The 81-year-old, who had been receiving specialized medical care at the time of his passing, left behind a significant legacy in the fields of law and education.
Justice Nare, remembered for his dedication and commitment to civil service, played a pivotal role in various judicial capacities throughout his distinguished career. He served as the chairperson of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) and was instrumental in promoting national unity and dialogue among political parties.
In a heartfelt tribute, President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed sorrow over Justice Nare’s passing and acknowledged his contributions to Zimbabwe. “On behalf of the Party, Zanu PF, the Government, my family, and on my behalf, I wish to express my deepest, heartfelt condolences to the Nare family,” he stated. “Retired Justice Nare stood out as a figure whose commitment to our nation in the fields of law and education will forever be remembered.”
As part of the State-assisted funeral arrangements, the government aims to ensure that Justice Nare receives a fitting farewell that reflects his service and contributions. This includes assistance with funeral expenses, a ceremonial send-off, and recognition of his achievements in the legal sector and education.
Justice Nare’s career began as a primary school teacher before transitioning to the judiciary, where he held numerous positions, including magistrate and president of various courts. His leadership in the NPRC was particularly significant, as he worked towards fostering peace and reconciliation in a country striving for unity after political turmoil.
The decision to accord Justice Nare a State-assisted funeral underscores the government’s recognition of his lifetime of service and the impact he had on Zimbabwean society. President Mnangagwa emphasized that Justice Nare’s work would not be forgotten, saying, “He served our nation with characteristic diligence and maturity, always giving his utmost until his retirement last year.”
In light of Justice Nare’s multifaceted contributions, his family is set to receive not only financial support but also emotional backing from the government during this difficult time. As the nation comes together to honor a man who dedicated his life to public service, the State-assisted funeral serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of his legacy in Zimbabwe.
