A suspected bale smuggler is on the run after being allegedly found in possession of 107 second hand clothing bales in Waterfalls, Harare.
Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) officers were tipped off leading to the recovery of the bales estimated at over US$30 000.
A statement from the ZACC seen by Nhau/Indaba states that the suspect escaped while the bales were being loaded for transportation to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA).
“ZACC received a tip-off that there were bales of second hand clothes estimated at over US$30 000 from a suspected smuggler in Waterfalls, Harare.
“Investigations by ZACC revealed the bales were stashed in a room rented to Takudzwa Marshal Kaluza of Budiriro… at Number 212 Fern Road, Waterfalls, Harare.”
The place is believed to be a storage facility for second hand clothing smuggled into the country for resale.
Kaluza is alleged to have fled from the scene leaving behind a navy blue Toyota Hiace, registration number AFK2227.
“While the team was loading the bales into a truck for transportation to ZIMRA offices for further investigations.
“The recovered 107 bales were handed over to ZIMRA awaiting assessment of payable duty and penalties while Kaluza’s vehicle is being held pending further investigations,” the corruption watchdog said. Nhau/Indaba
