Water Woes Hit CCC Run Bindura Municipality

Bindura Bureau

Bindura Municipality’s eastern and high density suburbs have clocked five consecutive days without running water amid reports that the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) run authority is out of treatment chemicals.

Ratepayers in these suburbs are reportedly waking up as early as 3am to queue for water at unprotected wells in the wetlands within their locations.

Others are utilising  Aerodrome Shopping Centre where ZANU PF politburo member and Bindura North legislaltor Kenneth Musanhi sank a borehole after noticing the council’s inefficiency.

According to Mayor Brian Kembo, there are also some mechanical faults at the municipality’s water works station.

“We have since engaged Rumike Engineering to come to our rescue and work on the problem.

“We are also in short supply of water treatment chemicals. Our supplier Chemplex is not managing to efficiently serve us, their chemical production has been low for some time now,” he said.

Residents getting water from wells are forced to ration the commodity since they cannot sustain them all including the borehole.

Amid water woes, the local authority is allegedly failing to collect garbage around its locations leaving residents with no option but to come up with illegal dumpsites within their locations.

Those who spoke to Nhau on condition of anonymity said lack of water was now promoting open defecation around their suburbs posing health risks as they cannot use their ablution facilities.

“Lack of water is putting us at risk of disease outbreaks as there is excreta everywhere. We cannot use our toilets as there is no running water.”

Another resident in a WhatsApp group created by the Residents of Bindura Association said:

“We have been and are still religiously paying our services bills. Why can’t they find another source of the treatment chemicals while Chemplex puts its house in order?

The association’s secretary general, Joel Mandundu expressed his anger against the town fathers saying they are taking residents for granted.

He urged ratepayers to open their eyes and minds next election and vote wisely for better services.

Bindura Municipality has a total of 12 councillors, ten of them from CCC and the remainder from ZANU PF. Nhau/Indaba
