Winky D Scoops “Best Male Artist” 2023 AFRIMA Award

By Purity Marungisa
Zimbabwean dancehall megastar Winky D has again proved that he truly is the dancehall king as he took home the award for “Best Male Artist” in Southern Africa last night at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).

Winky was up against other nominees including South Africa’s own A-Reece, Blxckie, DJ Tarico, Gemini Major, Focalistic, Kabza De Small, Muskateers, Master KG and Zakes Bantwini among others competing to clinch the award.

Commenting on his socials, Winky D said: “My musical heart continues to overflow with boundless gratitude.

“I will continue appreciating the support you give me. Having you behind my music remains a blessing l can’t exchange for anything in this life.

The love you have showered my music remains overwhelming. It remains the biggest inspiration to my musical dreams.”

In January 2021, Winky D won the Best Dancehall Artiste 2020 Award at the African Entertainment Awards United States of America (AEAUSA).

During the same year in May, he scooped another international award after winning the Best African/ Dancehall Entertainer at the 39th edition of the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) held in Jamaica.

However, the 8th AFRIMA was held from January 12 – 15, 2023 in Dakar Senegal.

Globally recognised stars including Senegalese maestro Youssou Ndour, and Nigerian artists P-Square and Tiwa Savage were among those set to perform during the main awards ceremony at the 15,000-seat Dakar stadium.

AFRIMA is the pinnacle of recognition for African music globally.

The award attracted African superstars from all parts of the continent who gathered in Senegal for the annual ceremony that celebrates the best music from the continent in the year in view.

Media reports say the mass appeal of contemporary genres such as Afrobeats, where artists sing and rap over electronic backing tracks, has translated into record sales and sold-out concerts for some African artists across the continent and also in the United States and parts of Europe in recent years.
