Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced the appointment of Norman Mapeza as the interim coach for the national football team, the Warriors.

The decision comes in the wake of the recent departure of the former head coach, who resigned citing personal reasons.

ZIFA officials expressed confidence in Mapeza’s ability to lead the Warriors effectively. In a statement, Zifa said:

“ZIFA is pleased to announce that Norman Mapeza has been appointed as the interim head coach of the men’s Zimbabwe national team, for the upcoming four-nations tournament in Malawi. The tournament which will be played in Lilongwe from the 18th-26th of March, features hosts Malawi, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

“Norman Mapeza is the current head coach of Zimbabwe Premier League side FC Platinum with whom he has won multiple league titles. He is also a former national team captain and has had several stints as head coach of the men’s senior national team.

“Norman Mapeza will be assisted by Ngezi Platinum Stars head coach, Takesure Chiragwi.”

The interim appointment comes with the immediate task of preparing the team for upcoming international fixtures, including crucial qualifiers for major tournaments. With a limited timeframe to work with, Mapeza faces the challenge of instilling his tactical philosophy and building cohesion within the squad.

Fans and football pundits have mixed reactions to the news, with some expressing optimism in Mapeza’s capabilities, while others express concerns about the timing of the coaching change and its potential impact on the team’s performance. Social media platforms are buzzing with discussions about the new interim coach, with supporters eager to see the direction Mapeza takes the national team.

Mapeza himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged the responsibility that comes with leading the Warriors. He emphasized the importance of unity and hard work, pledging to give his best to ensure the team’s success during his tenure.

As the Warriors prepare for their upcoming challenges, all eyes will be on Mapeza and his coaching staff. The nation eagerly awaits the outcome of this interim appointment and hopes for a renewed sense of determination and success for the Zimbabwean national football team. Nhau/Indaba
