Escalating tensions in the North African nation of Sudan have led Zimbabwe to start evacuating its nationals from the war torn country, Nhau/Indaba has learnt.
This development comes in the wake of the recent deployment of 11 police officers for United Nations peacekeeping duties in South Sudan which has experienced several coups and civil strife since attaining its independence in 1956.
Information secretary Nick Ndabaningi Mangwana confirmed the latest development Monday and said all of the nationals are safe.
“Zimbabwe is in the process of evacuating its nationals from Sudan. All Zimbabweans including those who work at the Embassy have been moved from Khartoum to the Port of Sudan from where transport arrangements are underway to bring them home. All indications are that all our nationals are safe.”
Infighting between the Sudanese army under the command of General Abdel-Fattah Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo has seen the country’s main airport in Khartoum experiencing heavy fighting leading foreign states to evacuate their citizens from the Port of Sudan.
Yesterday the United States military sent three helicopters to evacuate embassy staff.
Over 22 other countries are making efforts to safely evacuate their diplomats and citizens from the country including China, France, Britain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Japan, India, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Italy, South Korea, Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia and the EU.
